Au Pair in Norway – visa process

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Getting a visa done is sometimes a stressful process, luckily for you we are here to help!

The Norwegian visa process is a lengthy process and waiting for a verdict may take up to 6 months since the appointment was attended. Before you attend the appointment, a few things have to be done and a couple of documents have to be gathered first.

The visa process formally starts once you have confirmed the match with your host family. They will get documentation ready on their side and our Visa Experts will give you all the needed documentation.

Extra documentation that you have to ensure that you have in preparation for the visa appointment (along with the paperwork that we will give you) includes:

  1. Two colour visa photos (passport size)

  2. Original and a copy of your passport (all marked pages)

  3. Original and copy of your diploma / Grade 12 High School certificate / Degree

Once we have issued you with the correct and needed documentation you will be assisted with the online visa application.

The total visa costs for Norway is 9100 NOK however the Au Pair is responsible to pay 3800 NOK (approx. R6700 at time of print).

The next step in the process is to attend the visa appointment. The appointment is attended in Cape Town, South Africa at the VFS Global visa center.

Citizens of Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana also have to attend their appointment in Cape Town. Special arrangements can be made to return to your home country and courier your passport back to the Norwegian Embassy. At the visa appointment you should be prepared to pay a service fee between R400 and R600.

Once your passport has been handed in the wait for the verdict begins. In some cases, it takes two months to wait for the verdict, however it may take up to 6 months. The UDI will send you an email, notifying you that your residence permit has been granted. Your passport will be couriered back to you in most cases with the entry visa sticker in it.

When you have received your passport, we can formally start to book your flights and then you are ready for departure!
