What to eat in Thailand

Thailand is a culinary paradise, with a wide variety of dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. From spicy curries to sweet desserts, Thai food is known for its bold flavours and fresh ingredients. When I first arrived in Thailand, I was so overwhelmed by all of the food options and strange-looking dishes, most menus were in Thai, so my list includes must-try dishes, which I would recommend through my own trial and error.


Pad Thai Pad Thai is perhaps one of the most iconic Thai dishes, and for good reason. This stir-fried noodle dish is a perfect blend of sweet, sour, and savoury flavours, with ingredients like tamarind, fish sauce, and palm sugar. It is typically served with shrimp, chicken, or tofu, and garnished with crushed peanuts and lime wedges.

Tom Yum Soup Tom Yum soup is a spicy and sour soup that is a staple in Thai cuisine. It typically contains lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal, chilli peppers, and shrimp or chicken. The broth is tangy and flavorful, with a kick of heat that is sure to wake up your taste buds.

Green Curry Green Curry is a popular Thai dish that features a creamy and spicy coconut milk-based sauce. It is typically made with chicken or seafood and a variety of vegetables like eggplant, green beans, and bell peppers. The curry paste is made from fresh herbs like lemongrass, basil, and cilantro, giving it a vibrant green colour and a complex flavour.

Mango Sticky Rice Mango Sticky Rice is a simple yet delicious dessert that is a must-try when visiting Thailand. It features ripe mango slices served over a bed of sticky rice that has been cooked in coconut milk and sugar. The combination of sweet mango and creamy coconut rice is simply divine.

Som Tam Som Tam, also known as papaya salad, is a refreshing and spicy salad made with shredded green papaya, tomatoes, and green beans. The dressing is made with lime juice, fish sauce, chilli peppers, and garlic, giving it a tangy and spicy flavour.
